THE OPENING OF THE NEW SAATCHI GALLERY, LONDON
BackThe new Saatchi Gallery opened its doors for the first time on Tuesday evening, with celebrities and art world stars arriving in their droves for the art event of the season. The 70,000 sq ft gallery was packed by 7pm with a queue quickly forming along the King's Road. Guests such as Mica Parish, Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk and Ruby Wax joined collectors Anita Zabludowicz, Ivor Braka and Daria Zhukova to see the new gallery and inaugural exhibition of Chinese contemporary art. Julian Schnabel, whose paintings are on display in the Phillips de Pury & Company space on the third floor of the gallery, flew in from New York for the event, and Lily Allen and Nigella Lawson posed for photographers among the wheelchair-bound old men of Sun Yuan and Peng Yu's installation.
