Freight train in Burlington, Iowa
BackThis is footage of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train taken while I was waiting for Amtrak in Burlington, Iowa on 10-10-08. I was supposed to go from Burlington to Chicago, and Chicago to Crawfordsville, Indiana to spend the weekend with some friends I have not seen for a long time. However the California Zephyr was running over two and a half hour late, and would not arrive into Chicago until after my train to Crawfordsville left. I was rather bummed out by that, and decided that instead of being trapped in Chicago, Id just come home and get drunk the whole weekend. Amtrak was pretty cool about the deal and refunding the ticket money. Anyway, here is a freight train coming down the tracks it was pretty cool. I was also kind of impressed with how the Burlington station looked, its a pseudo Frank Lloyd Wright design and in the 40s and 50s had a bar and restaurant in it, right now its really run down and has no bar or restaurant. The city of Burlington is trying to get funds to restore it to its former glory, which would rock. God I wish I had been living in the 40s and 50s when trains ran everywhere and you could sit in the train station having cocktails while waiting to go to Chicago. Oh the good old days of rail transport when hot women like Eva Marie Saint had sex with Cary Grant in a sleeper car (North By Northwest, watch it) in the US, gone, but not quite forgotten, at least not yet. Eventually I do plan on taking the train to Chicago since Ive always wanted to cross the Mississippi by train. I think next year Ill do it, so stay tuned.
