#14: The Wind-Chime Chirping of CONNIE STEVENS
BackFourteenth "flower" of sixteen composing a true video lei blooming with the sweet and cheery presence of actress Connie Stevens singing as "Cricket Blake" in the classic American television detective series HAWAIIAN EYE (1959-1963). Fourteenth "flower" focus: "LOVE SONGS" [PART ONE OF THREE] --"Don't Take Your Love from Me" [Henry Nemo] --"Tea for Two" [Youmans/Caesar] --"I May Be Wrong (But I Think You're Wonderful)" [Sullivan/Ruskin] --"I Like the Likes of You" [Duke/Harburg] Why put "Crickets" on the YouTube hearth? Because Connie Stevens's work on HAWAIIAN EYE deserves rediscovery. As "Cricket Blake"—perky, friendly, dependable, and angelically Barbie-doll beautiful—Connie delivered one of the most winning portrayals of benevolent femininity in television history. Cricket's regular episodic "Shell Bar" singing engagements were like rays of sunlight piercing through the heavily-clouded drama that surrounded them. Her voice—earnest, young, and appealing; her presence—warm, poised, dynamic, gorgeous: Cricket was a woman of many grace notes. If the noblest purpose of art is to uplift the spirit, Connie Stevens gave Cricket Blake the power to do so superlatively. On behalf of a grateful audience of millions—and more personally, in honor of a woman whose work I value tremendously—I choose to braid a video lei with Cricket blossoms. Braiding? I ain't hep to that step, but I'll dig it. Questions or comments are sincerely welcome. Lewd, derogatory, or irrational comments will be led to the rim of a volcano and (of course) Connie's "Forever Spring" website: http://www.foreverspring.com/index.htm If it hasn't occurred by the time you read this: would you like to see "Hawaiian Eye" necessarily restored and finally released on DVD? Please petition the studio!
