Devinull Poetry Archive 69- China Garden
BackChina Garden 31/08/08 The garden is meant To be a place that asserts mastery Of the architects of Shenzou Over all the ribbons of nature By that delicacy of dedication That they made to recollect the Ming They give over a square of the world To the timelessly recurring. My mother and I are sipping green tea And the pictograms by the waterfall are red. Four matrons laugh While by the bar two orange skinned blondes hesitate Over whether to hear the musicians play The white girls serving tea wear silk chemises And their hair is kept in coifs, meant to be exotic. And the pictograms by the waterfall are red. The pictograms by the koi, and the skimmer bugs, are pea green. Something slides by so fluidly, and shimmering from my mind. For a minute I think of Roosevelt Then of Anno Tanaka But then at last I grasped nothingness And of course I had to let it go. There is a half circle of blue Amidst the blanket of Portland grey. All the peoples of the world within this garden are contained. Then the points of the line of my life were turned So that there was only the great long now And the workings of all things in motion were solved So there was only the map of the universe, as read by the harmony Of the band and the water that was falling. Leaving, at last whenever we’re leaving My mother forgets to pay the cheque. There was no time there, you see. But when is time anywhere?
