Arnold Schönberg conducts: Pierrot Lunaire

Back

Opus 21, from 1912. On words by Albert Giraud. From the first part : I. Mondestrunken; II. Colombine; III. Der Dandy; IV. Eine blasse Wäscherin; V. Valse de Chopin; VI. Madonna. A document. One of the very rare occasions to hear Schönberg himself conducting. From the tempi that the maëstro takes, one can recognize that these pieces originated from Brettl contexts, more so than most of the other, more recent recordings. "Rise o mother of all sorrows, from the altar of my verses in thy lacerated arms holdst thou thy Son's holy body manifesting Him to mankind- yet the eyes of men avert themselves, o mother of all sorrows!" Erika Stiedry-von Wagner, recitation Rudolf Kolisch, violin Stefan Auber, cello Eduard Steuermann, piano Leonard Posella, flute & piccolo Kalman Bloch, clarinet & bass clarinet Recording dates from 1940, and was re-issued in 1951.
