Jaguar masks and goggle eyes

Back

In Zitlala, Tigres from rival barrios enter the town square from opposite sides and square off with each other. The fights start up suddenly and almost randomly within the crowd. People push in close to see the fighters and jump back to avoid being hit with a club, which creates a violent ebb and flow among the spectators. Although intended to represent jaguars, many of the costumes seem inspired by tigers. The goggle eyes of the headgear match those on ancient representations of the god Tlaloc.
