Arthur Kampela Avant-Bossa-Nova Copacabana

Back

"Copacabana" is a structural amplification of the Bossa-Nova binary form/style. While it maintains the inner syncopation characteristic of the genre or the traditional Bossa rhythm, it subverts its flux by adding odd meters like 7/4 bars, etc. Thus, differently from the "lounge or ornamental" takes on the style attempted by many pop-oriented artists, this piece is a true and NEW contribution to the Bossa form or format. Although the melodic and lyric aspects of the piece are clearly stated, the composer tries to extend the harmonic field of the genre using complex (atonal) chords and/or unusual polytonal aggregates. The piece talks about the urban landscape of Copacabana, a middle-class enclave in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with its dirty streets, homeless, bars, prostitutes, commerce, citizens, etc. Notice the twist on the very title word "Copacabana" as the music unfolds, creating a lyric short-circuit where the semantic element suffers its "blows" like in "copa-bagana," "coa pica grana," "copaca-mana," etc., and other extensions that compress and expands the word as if trying to ex/implode its meaning(s)...
