It was a summer retreat for the family of San Francisco dentist, Dr. Van Denberg and his wife Elizabeth and their three children. The family first came to stay in the carriage house, which had small living quarters above it. As the Van Denbergs spent more and more time at the property, they developed it into a wonderful place where friends and family could languish in the sun, away from the cold summers of San Francisco. Their summer place evolved into a woodsy, hillside wonderland with a lovely koi pond, spurting fountains, walking trails, and even a ballroom. The Victorian Mansion: The three story main house was built in 1884 with 5 bedrooms. It features native redwood wainscoting and ceilings 9-1/2 high on the main floor. The living room and library ceilings are original and much of the early wainscoting remains throughout the house today. The breakfast room still has all its original wooded walls and ceilings and features a continuum of windows to give it the sunniest disposition in the house! The house is currently used as 3 separate family units, although interior stairways connect all levels. Top level: 2 br/2ba, gorgeous designer kitchen, rough hewn slate floors, 13 foot ceilings and an unparalleled view of the aboreal delights of the property including picnic grounds and koi pond. Mid level: 2br/2ba, much original wood wainscoting and ceiling. Elegant dining room adjacent to deck overlooking pond and outdoor entertainment area. Open living room and dining nook with beamed ceilings. Large family room with center island and lots of cabinets. A very livable floor plan with room for kids bedrooms on the lower floor. The View House: Charming 2 story, approximately 2,800 square feet with beam ceiling in the wonderfully open floor plan. Living room and adjacent dining room feature multiple picture windows with views over garden,woods and City Lights to theSanta Cruz Mountains. Kitchen w/ open beam ceiling and island.The master suite is upstairs while 2 children/guest bedrooms and 2 baths are on lower floor. Expansive decking off both stories. Private, peaceful location in a special niche of the estate. Tremendous usable land The Guest House/Cottage: 2 separate rentable units tucked away adjacent to the creek and woods. One studio unit and a one-bedroom unit. These units are always in demand. Nature: Walk along the carved paths of the estate, the same land the Ohlone Indians inhabited, through acres of Coast Live Oaks, Bay Laurels, California Buckeye and Madrone. A botanical wonderland. Pick wild blackberries for your breakfast or chantrelle mushrooms for your evening's pasta. Iris' and lillies available for your table vases. An early morning hike may be rewarded with the sighting of a doe and her fawn down by the creek, or listen in the early evening, as you sit by the fire, for the hooting of the Great Horned Owl. With La Serena Open Space your immediate neighbor, it seems there is no end to where you can hike or what you might see, including the famous California Poppy, Wild Lupine and Wake Robin. Birdlife ranges from hawks to hummingbirds and everything in between. Location: Nestled into the Oaks of Los Gatos yet within walking distance to downtown, the setting is surreal. The property begins at the end a small cul de sac announced by the understated gated entrance. Entering the tree-line, meandering lane takes you past the artisitic fountain and the Koi pond to the stately Victorian manse.
