Rush - Making Memories + Temples Of Syrinx

Back

Issued in Canada 1977 on Anthem ANS-001. Rush was formed 1968 in Willowdale, an area of Toronto, by Alex Lifeson (guitar), front man Jeff Jones, and drummer John Rutsey. Within only a couple of weeks, Jones was replaced by Lifeson's schoolmate Geddy Lee on bass and vocals. They signed with Ray Danniels as their manager, and played bars and high schools (including mine), gaining experience, until they were able to cut their first single in 1973, "Not Fade Away" b/w "You Can't Fight It." This did little to advance their career, so with the aid of Danniels, they set up Moon Records. With Terry Brown engineering, they made their first album in 1974. It was only locally popular in Toronto until WMMS in Cleveland picked up on the album. They added "Working Man" to their playlist. It resonated with listeners, and an audience in the US was secured. This led to Rush being signed for distribution in the US on Mercury. Just as the album was released, John Rutsey had to resign from the group due to his ongoing struggles with diabetes, and his dislike of touring. Rush held auditions, and selected Neil Peart, of Hamilton, Ontario as drummer. He joined them two weeks prior to their first US tour. The three have been together ever since. Peart became principal songwriter of the group, while Lifeson and Lee preferred instead to concentrate on music. Rush had the first single on Ray Danniels' Anthem label. "Making Memories" was issued in 1977, two years after having been on the "Fly By Night" album, and its B-side, "Temples Of Syrinx" was excerpted from the longer suite on 1976's "2112." The record did not chart in RPM. While doing research on this single, I discovered its incredible scarcity, and saw a copy going for two hundred pounds British - which is nearly $400! So enjoy both sides of this Canadian rarity. You might not see another copy of it elsewhere...
