Rock Island Line by Huddie Leadbelly Ledbetter Bottleneck Slide Blues Guitar

Back

Rock Island Line by Huddie Leadbelly Ledbetter performed by Keni Lee Burgess on Commercial Street in Provencetown Mass. Cape Cod 2008. Huddie Ledbetter, better known to the music world as "Lead Belly" was born January 20, 1889, in Mooringsport, Louisiana (near Shreveport). Huddie was legendary for picking 1,000 lbs of cotton a day, and lining the railroad tracks. While it is claimed the song refers to the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, the song is considerably older than the first recording, and from some of the lyrics it can be interpreted that the "railroad" is the Underground Railroad, a slave escape route.
