The 'OC Guys and Gals - Wonderful Hamilton
BackDistributed to the public as a promotion by radio station 1150 CKOC, Hamilton, Ontario, 1960. Back in the late 1950s and early '60s, there were several radio music production companies that offered to take a stock piece of music, and adapt the lyrics to mention your radio station, and places in your community. It is unclear which one of them made this recording. CKOC in Hamilton had such an item made in 1960, and gave the records away to the public at promotional events. CKOC is the oldest radio station in English Canada, and the second-oldest radio station in Canada. It was started by Herb Slack on May 1st, 1922 as an offshoot of his Wentworth Radio Supply Company. Over the next 29 years, CKOC changed frequencies from 880 and 630 to 1120, then moved to its permanent home of 1150 in 1951. They aired a Top 40 format from 1960 until February 17, 1992, at which time they began an oldies format as CKMO. The station's identity was so strongly ingrained in listeners that they couldn't take to the new call letters. In April of 1993, they resumed the CKOC call letters, and identify themselves as Oldies 1150. The 'OC bee that you see on the label was their trademark - mascot - logo at the time. I have put together a slide show featuring scenery of Hamilton, accompanied by the CKOC record. It's a fitting tribute to the city where I was born. Thank you to members of the Hamilton Flickr Group, some of whose photos were used in the making of this presentation.
