That client is Lee J. Cobb playing Rico Angelo, boss of the Chicago mobsters. One night he meets Vicki Gaye (Cyd Charisse) at a party given by Angelo . Vicki is a chorus girl who works at a nightclub the Golden Rooster that Cobb owns. He takes her home that night and he is drawn to her but Tommy walks with a limp due to a childhood accident, and refuses women because of his wife's repulsion of his crookedness. He is still married to a woman who found the sight of his crippled leg so unbearable that she left him. Next morning, after Vicki wants him to return money given to her by gangster Louis Canetto (John Ireland) at the party, Tommy cynically remarks about Vicki accepting money and chases her away telling her "a girl deserves what she can get". Later, Vicki attends Canetto's trial to watch Tommy's closing argument and watches as he makes shameless use of his physical disability to raise the pity of the jurors, freeing murderer Ireland. It is the secret to his success with the jury. She tells him if that is what he wants "pity" then he has hers accusing him of hypocrisy. He snarls at her telling her to get out, but he is stung.
