Covered countless times, probably the best known version is by the German sextet, the Comedian Harmonists. Here, that evergreen is performed by the Viennese comedian from inter-war period, Hermann Leopoldi. -------------------------------- Hermann LEOPOLDI (né Hermann Cohn) b: 1888, Vienna, Austria. d: 1959, Vienna, Austria - Composer / Cabaret Singer and Pianist. As a child, he studied piano with his father -a professional musician. After attending High School and some commercial training Hermann decided to make music his career, and found work as a pianist. In 1911 he married Eugenie Kraus, with whom he had two children, and after the First World War he began his career in Vienna, working first as a piano humorist and he soon became a 'steady' in the Viennese cabarets. He composed songs - in the Viennese style, many with lyrics by Peter Herz. One such, entitled "In a Small Cafe in Hernals" might be his most popular song. In 1925 he opened -- with the Conférencier Fritz Wiesenthal -- a „Kabarett Leopoldi-Wiesenthal", in short „L.W." -- where performed the best Vienna actors and comedians, Charlotte Waldow, Franzi Ressel, Armin Berg, Hans Moser, Szöke Szakall, Max Hansen, Fritz Grünbaum, Karl Valentin. Unfoirtunately, the economical crisis in Austria made him clone the business and go to Berlina where he cut his first records; many more followed -into the 1950s. In the late 1920/early 1930s he was playing in Berlin together with Betja Milskaja - the Jewish cabaret star, also coming from Vienna -- and they toured to Prague, Paris, and Bucharest. After the Nazi Annexation of Austria, he was arrested and, from 1938 to 1939, was first in the Dachau concentration camp, and later in the Buchenwald concentration camp. There he, together with the lyricist Fritz Löhner - Beda, composed the famous "Buchenwald Song". In 1942, Loehner Beda was murdered in Auschwitz, but Leopoldi, with the help of the huge bribe (paid by his wife's family), managed to leave Germany, and found a repose in the USA. In New York he again began to compose Viennese songs, together with other exiled artists. In 1947, he returned to his hometown, Vienna, where his artistic ability could express itself with old and new songs. -------------------------- VERONIKA, DER LENZ IST DA! Der Herr Sohn, der Papa Schwärmen für Veronika, Das macht der Frühling. Jeder klopft heimlich an, Jeder fragt sie: Wo und wann Komm' ich endlich mal dran? Veronika, der Lenz . . . . Der Gemahl sucht voll Schneid Anschluß an die Stubenmaid. Das macht der Frühling. Seine Frau schickt er weg, Dann ruft er das Mädchen keck Und erklärt ihr den Zweck: Veronika, der Lenz....
