LIDAR guns are thought to be aligned. Some are. They provide a Heads up Display (HUD)to assist the operator where they are aiming. The problem is that since a LIDAR gun shoots a multiple intensity of LIDAR light: Known as a stacked "laser diode array", the beam can reflect from anywhere when the gun is viewed through the HUD by the operator. Sometimes the beam of light location is different than the "dot" or aiming rectile shown to the operator. This can be dependent upon where the distance the gun "aim" was set to. As most rifle gun owners know, the scope and the barrel are a few inches apart. Some call this parallax error. So a target lined up in the dot HUD (or crosshairs in a rifle scope) may not be aimed correctly at a closer or farther distance. The aim of the gun needs to be addressed, and a beam pattern that looks great at 50 feet, may be quite a bit off target when "aimed"/used at 1500 feet. Here's an example of how I check the LIDAR beam vs the HUD "dot". For simplification I'm showing you a close (49 ft) target, because the LIDAR light is really hard to see at 1,000 feet without my special instruments, so this is a simple demonstration to give you an idea of 2" parallax error up close, which is typical when the HUD scope is 2-3" above the laser diode lens.. Personally, I like a center beam pattern and HUD "dot" aligned at ~ 700 feet.
