Nahi Kubul Part 1

COME TOGETHER FOR THE CHANGE I am a cultural activist working on the street plays since last 9 years in Kanpur with Jan Chetna Kala Manch. We are a group of youths who formed this cultural group specially oriented to address the social issues geared towards creating a movement. We were all urban based cultural activist who would perform on the streets on very sensitive issues concerning the society like, riots, on governance, the educational system, on atrocities of police, women exploitation ,dalit atrocities etc. we received lot of media attention and we became a leading cultural group in Kanpur. We were also associated with various social movements and would perform and do cultural training programme with these movement groups. This experience made lot of impact on our thoughts, vision and our whole personality. It also gave us lot of exposure to see the various realities of life, the struggle of poor people, the discrimination due to the caste and communal factor, gender questions and problem of rural -- semi urban youth. All this experience brought new vigor, sensitivity and energy in our plays and production, this would attract large number of audience. Due to the serious performance, our group reached quite a higher stage of cultural activism when we got a chance to perform " Azadi ke Trane" in WSF, Mumbai, on a highly prestigious " Faiz Stage" in collaboration with Pratidhwani. There was no dearth of talent in our group but on the other hand there was a big vacuum that engulfed all of us that was basically a conflict between the middle class life style and the cultural activism. Most of our group members were under the pressure to earn for the family or settle down by marrying. This pressure disintegrated our group and most of group members who could not stand the pressure surrendered ultimately. Another question that always haunted us that was not analyzed by most of us were that during the performance in the street we were joined by the audience and everybody of became a part of it. But after the play was over we were left to ourself, that was quite frustrating for us since we did not have any mechanism for evaluating our work or follow up our work. We did not have any support also there was no teacher as such who would guide us to help us analyse this situation. In fact we felt in all these years we could not establish any connection between cultural movement and political movement. But now I started making a short story documentry movies & our plays and circulated in YOUTUBE . We worked closely with National Forum of Forest People and Forest Workers ,Dehli Forum,NAPM,and their other constituent groups, while working with them we were constantly faced with this question.
