How to Irreversibly Transform Money (2004)

Back

a project by Paul Griffiths and Cesare Pietroiusti. curated by Hajnalka Somogyi, Trafo gallery, Budapest, October 2004 recording: Endre Koronczi; editing: Mikael Paananen Beginning in June 2004 we sent out an information sheet inviting anyone to contribute to this project by sending in one or more bank-notes in a currency that is in use, as long as their value seemed significant to the contributor. We researched as many ways as possible to irreversibly alter the material (paper, ink, etc.) out of which paper money is made through physical, chemical, or biological procedures. Between October 19th and 22nd 2004 we processed all of the bank-notes that were sent to us in all possible ways , and we subsequently exhibited the results in the gallery. At the end of the exhibition each contributor was sent back the residue of his/her bank-note, together with a certificate. In all, we altered 90 bank-notes, for a total value of about 1000 euros.
