The DCCT study ended in 1993. This study examined whether intensive treatment with the goal of maintaining blood glucose close to normal could decrease diabetes complications. Among the 1,441 participants the intensive glucose control group showed the development of complications was slowed. What was the long-term outcome for the intensive treatment vs. the conventional group? Today 15 years after the DCCT the gap between average HbA1c in the intensive and convention groups is closing. The complications between the groups is nearly the same line, and the statistics continue to climb with hypoglycemic unawareness, lethal car accidents, and unnecessary deaths oh yeah and the average cost to maintain diabetes is extortive!
