The serial number is on the back of the headstock on the most guitars. On Gibson and Epiphone the serial number tells where and when the guitar was made.

thank you for the advice ;) where would the serial number be?

Yeah, that post below was a general advice. There may be nice Chinese Epiphones too, but the most I played were no good. Anyhow I am no expert and have not played them all. Guitars develop from year to year, especially these from new Asian factories. Guitars are made of wood, hence each guitar is unique. My Korean Goldtop U 2003 is better than my former Gibson LP std 1978 was; both in quality and in playability.

My advice is an Epi LP made in Korea, Unsung or Saien 1998-2008. Serial numbers begin with U and I. I'd be careful, and probably not buy a Chinese one. Many agree that they are generally a lower brand and sloppy crafted. Since Korea Epis are underrated youll get a mint one for 250-600, no need to buy a worn out one! For $700 you'll likely only get second-rate Gibson LP Std. A top Epi is better. My LP is a U 2003, the best guitar I ever had. Play before buy, there come dogs from any plant.

ahh, i was looking at some epiphone les pauls yesterday, im looking into buying an electric guitar (ive been playing accoustic for several years and im hoping to branch out and play stuff i can relate to) i was especially looking at an Epiphone Les Paul custom, it was white. I am open to paying as much as 700 dollars if it will get me something that can last and that will sound awesome. what are your opinions on what type of guitar i should get, and if id be better off with a "real" les paul?

usually when someone tries copying an original piece it doesn`t quite sound the same but with this version i think its a brilliant job :-)
