Well, not exactly victory or defeat. If you're at a low level, then combos can help finish off tough enemies so you'll take less damage, but the game doesn't require the use of combos. Combos simply make things easier, especially if you can hit 16 note combos frequently. Throught his playthrough, my average hit was about 4-5

ok thank you very much for telling me. so a random battle could end in victory or defeat depending on the party and the background music throughtout the whole game right? I really should have guessed it was rhythm based from the music note symbol that symbolizes regular attacks...

No my friend. You combo in this game by tapping A to match the beat of the background's music. For the song I cannot combo, the beat is "1..2..123..1231.2..3"

wait can you explain what you mean by "...song you can never seem to combo." this whole time i thought combos were luck based mainly because this is a game series that i have never played before...
